Our Radio journalism course will give you the skills to get involved in local and national radio and earn money your spare time.

There are many opportunities for freelance radio journalists and broadcasters, especially with so many local and community stations in every area.

Most of our students began as novices, but are now earning by writing about their skills, experiences and interests. Come and join them – they get articles broadcast and published every day.

Your Radio journalism course tutor

Your tutor will be Andy Carter.

Andy started his professional career in 1990 as a broadcast journalist at Southern Radio in Hampshire and enjoyed spells working for Virgin Radio, the BBC and Sky News, as well as in local radio.

For nearly four years he was the managing editor at Isle of Wight Radio and for three years oversaw news output across 27 stations as the group head of news for the Local Radio Company.

Andy is currently director of communications at Northumbria University. Before that, he was the head of communications at Leeds City Council.

Radio journalism course entry requirements

The course is for anyone who wants to get started in radio journalism. It's for novices - but experienced journalists have benefited from it too.

You will need plenty of commitment and enthusiasm and good written English.

If you are looking for a career in magazine journalism, you can study it as part of our Magazine journalism course. This course leads to the NCTJ diploma.

Radio journalism course duration and hours

The course usually takes around three to six months. E-learning means you can work at your own pace and fit your studies around your lifestyle.

You can do extra work when it's quiet, and cut back if you're busy. And you can take time out if you need to.

Tutor support

You can now chat to a tutor using Skype when you need help, or you can e-mail them. You will usually hear back straight away.

Equipment

You'll need:

  • access to a computer with an internet connection
  • a microphone for your PC
  • free Audacity software
  • A portable recording device – one on your phone will be OK.
  • Microsoft Word software, or equivalent
  • an email account


Radio journalism course qualification

The course leads to the CTJT Diploma, which is fully accredited by ODLQC, and recognised by the media in the UK and abroad.

When you have finished

You will have the skills to start writing articles and packages for all types of radio stations.
