Ian Shine

Ian shineI decided to take the NCTJ magazine journalism course with CTJT as I wanted to find a route back into journalism after leaving the trade in 2006.

The course not only brushed up some of my journalistic skills that had become rusty - such as Quark-usage - but helped me develop things from scratch, including a thorough knowledge of media law, and learn practical things such as proofreading symbols.

I did the course over 18 months while holding down a full-time job abroad – first in Portugal and then in Poland.

The flexibility of studying with CTJT is what makes studying with them so great. I got modules emailed to me within hours of asking for them, and sometimes within minutes, and always got marked work back quickly.

As it is a distance learning course you can work at any hour of the day or night - but even when I was sending work to Cleland at 10pm or later it would often get sent back to me the same night.

Now that Cleland uses Skype chat his responses are instantaneous. I found Cleland very easy to interact with, and felt comfortable asking for further help or explanation when I didn't understand something.

I found his feedback constructive and insightful, particularly on the law side of the course.
In addition I was given assistance with re-writing my CV, and looking for jobs and work experience placements.

Enrolling on the course was easily one of the best decisions of my life, and the result of it is that I have got back into journalism and am working as a sub editor on a magazine, Travel Trade Gazette, that I love.

I have already been sent on a week-long assignment to Hong Kong - there are not many jobs in the world where you get perks like that.

Distance learning can be hard at times, but with a bit of perseverance and support from CTJT, it is easy to reap the benefits that it can bring.

Two years ago I was desperate for a career change, with aspirations of becoming a full-time tech journalist.

I figured the best way to fulfil this ambition was to take up a course in my spare time, and CTJT's distance-learning Magazine Journalism course fitted me perfectly.

With personal help from my tutor Cleland, I was able to complete the modules in my own time and at my own pace.

Each written section was accompanied with useful exercises, and my work was swiftly marked and returned with helpful comments.

Not only did CTJT help me through my NCTJ exams thanks to their past papers and revision guides, Cleland also gave me invaluable advice for subsequent job applications and interviews.

As a result, I landed an in-demand job with What Laptop magazine just 18 months after starting the course. A huge thanks to CTJT!

Having decided to pursue my journalistic ambitions, and being unable to get to an NCTJ-approved college, I chose CTJT's online distance learning course as the most convenient for my circumstances.

I have never regretted that decision.

The modular format of the magazine course means you can tackle exercises at your own pace while being confident of a thorough grounding in core skills, and the tutor's dedicated supervision is a constant help and encouragement.

Exercises are always marked and returned promptly with positive, constructive comments, and the resulting improvements to my writing skills have been very useful in securing freelance work on my local newspaper, The Eastern Daily Press.

I would not hesitate to recommend CTJT's courses to anyone prepared to put in the hard graft required to become a successful journalist.
