Our  shorthand course is for journalists who need to pass the NCTJ 100wpm exam.

It is suitable for beginners - and for people who want to develop their speed.

It uses some highly sophisticated teaching methods and a combination of web-based tutorials, MP3 files and teaching modules.

Shorthand course duration and hours

The course takes 6 - 12 months. E-learning means you can work at your own pace and fit your studies around your lifestyle.

You can do extra work when it's quiet, and cut back if you're busy. And you can take time out if you need to.

Tutor support

You can chat to a tutor using Skype when you need help, or you can e-mail them. You will usually hear back straight away.

The tutor

The diploma is led by Cleland Thom, one of the UK´s leading media trainers. He is a member of the Society of Editors and the Chartered Institute of Journalists' Professional Practice Board.

He led an accredited NCTJ course for 10 years, and has been coaching students for their NCTJ exams by distance learning since 2003.

He has:

  • consistently achieved 100 per cent NCTJ exam pass rates over the past 15 years
  • taken part in NCTJ accreditation panels
  • worked at three NCTJ-accredited training centres
  • taught all NCTJ exam subjects
  • marked hundreds of NCTJ exam papers


Cleland also delivers in-house training to newspapers, magazines and radio stations across the UK

Equipment

You'll need:

  • access to a computer with an internet connection
  • Microsoft Word software, or equivalent
  • an email account


Shorthand course qualification

The course leads to the CTJT Diploma, which is fully accredited and recognised in the UK and abroad. You will also be able to sit the NCTJ shorthand exam.

When you have finished

You should be able to do 100wpm+ shorthand.
