Journalism course student launches community website

Journalism course student Stuart Coleman has launched a community news site serving his Lancashire town.

The site is called Diggle News and has been going four weeks.

Stuart tells us: 'I launched the site to to address the lack of local news coverage in the Diggle area.

'There are many groups and individuals who work extremely hard to make Diggle and Saddleworth a great place to live.

'My aim is to make Diggle News the first point of contact for all local news and information.'

Media experts believe that hyperlocal websites like Stuart's will become more significant because of the decline of local papers and the trend towards using the internet as a news source.

Stuart added: 'It seems to me that there is an appetite for news at this level and this appears to be supported by the growing hit rate for Diggle News in it's first month.'
