CTJT student Linda Preston was fed up with the lack of local news in her town - so she launched her own website.
The Darwen Reporter is one of the UK's growing number of hyperlocal news sites.
Linda, who has done two CTJT courses, said: 'As more and more weekly newspapers shut down following the downturn in the economy many journalists are taking their own postcode and setting up their own news sites.
'I decided to join them! I've lived in Darwen almost all my life and know people still value the 'community news' element of their local newspaper.'
The site features major news stories from the Darwen patch and grassroots community news which some newspapers neglect.
Linda added: 'People want to read about who spoke at the last WI meeting or about frustrating delays caused by local road works.'
The site also contains sport, nostalgia and listings. And there are jobs and dining out sections where local businesses can advertise jobs or their restaurants cheaply.
Linda said: 'I think Darwen Reporter is helping reverse the trend of newspapers pulling back to big head offices and losing contact with the hand that feeds them.
'I believe I’m probably fulfilling the role of the old beat reporter who knew everything that was happening on their patch and someone who locals knew would listen to and understand their concerns.'
