Andy Carter

Andy started his professional career in 1990 as a broadcast journalist at Southern Radio in Hampshire. He enjoyed spells at radio stations in London and Bedfordshire before securing his first news editor role at Oasis Radio in Hertfordshire.

Andy’s next port of call was Manchester where he worked as head of news for what was then Kiss 102, the city’s new dance music station.

Andy returned to London to take on the news editor role for Virgin Radio after successfully pitching for the service to be run by independent producer Metro Networks. From London, the lure of local radio meant Andy then moved to Isle of Wight Radio as managing editor.

Andy’s return to the mainland in 2001 saw him working at Sky News before joining BBC Radio Berkshire with responsibility for the station’s all-‐speech breakfast show.

An opportunity to take on a broader role saw him re-join the Local Radio Company in 2004. There, he was group head of news, overseeing output across 27 radio stations and leading on editorial policy, legal and compliance and the training and development of more than 60 broadcast journalists.

At the beginning of 2008 Andy’s career took a different direction when he was appointed as a communications manager for Leeds City Council where he ran the press office.

In 2009 he was asked to step up to the post of head of communications. In this role, Andy transformed the council’s communications functions and oversaw a restructure in which communications and marketing staff were brought together as one team.

Andy took up his latest role, as director of communications at Northumbria University in July 2011. Despite the move into PR, Andy continues to do some radio work. He’s a trainer for the UK national Hospital Broadcasting Association and offers consultancy services to radio stations.
