David Porter
David Porter is a former award-winning editor who has more than 22 years’ experience in journalism.
The majority of his career was spent within the MEN Media stable of weekly newspapers in Greater Manchester.
He worked his way up from a reporter on the Middleton Guardian to become editor of the Heywood Advertiser and, latterly, editor of the Tameside and Glossop Advertiser.
Under his editorship, the Tameside Advertiser clinched a number of awards including Best Community Website and Best Free Paper in the North of England.
He led a staff of six reporters and two photographers producing two titles which was among the first within the MEN group to embrace the digital era in journalism
He is a keen advocate of new media, and was at the forefront of moves towards convergence. He was one of the first editors in the north west to attend the renowned Newsplex convergence course in North Carolina.
As well as being responsible for the training of all reporters, sub-editors and photographers, David was responsible for negotiating a groundbreaking concord with the local council which secured a five-year advertising deal at a time when many other councils were pulling ads from weekly papers.
David is an NCE examinations marker for the NCTJ, as well as acting as an assessor/interviewee for the same exams.
David set up his own company in 2009, offering freelance media services. He is also an associate lecturer at UCLAN university in Preston, which has a prestigious journalism department.
